Poppermost - a unique act for
a unique time
How the indie music scene has affected us -
Interestingly enough, it turns out that we weren't made for the local
Las Vegas music scene. There are too many factors that have little to
do with our idea of music and entertainment. The scene is driven by a
lot of things, and music usually takes a back seat to fashion and
socializing. We're songwriters and have to be heard. It's a slow
process, to be sure, but people will remember great songs, and that's
what we bring to our listeners worldwide.
In our first 6 years, we performed at private parties, live gigs in bars
and clubs, house parties, etc. For so many, the joy of the music lies
in the live performance in front of an adoring, cheering crowd of fans.
For us, over the course of time, the music itself began to mean more
than the live performance and "band life."
In our time away from the stage, we redirected our energy from stage
shows to writing and recording. We became Las Vegas' "sunshine pop"
Steely Dan, and lived in the studio. We enjoy knowing that when someone
listens to a recording of our music on a CD or an Internet radio
station, they're being able to actually HEAR the music the way we want
to portray it with all its many parts, something we were never able to
accomplish on stage.
The opportunities to get the music heard via streaming radio, digital
downloads, MP3s, etc. have revolutionized what the indie musician can do
these days, if only they have the means to take advantage of it. Day by
day, it's getting easier, as long as one avoids the inevitable
pitfalls. The sharks aren't only in the major record labels.
So, with that in mind, we decided to give a new face to the band. The
cartoons Lex Neon, Ms. Tex Duckingham, and Vegas Royal are our
musicmakers now. And yes, we admit that the cartoons are very
exaggerated extensions of the folks behind Poppermost.
Royal (aka bassist Roy Al Rendahl) owns Trimordial Studio, his
home-based audio-graphics business, where he records Poppermost, as well
as other clients for reasonable rates (a must for the indie musician).
Lex and Ms. Tex (Alex Oliver and wife Debbie) operate Suicide Pop!
Records, an indie label dedicated to "catching your ears, one song at a
time." In the past 7 years, they have recorded 3 full-length CDs, as
well as numerous singles and extended play discs.
For Alex, music is his love, his soul. For him, it's all about writing
songs and arranging music. He also loves classic 60s cartoons. For
Roy, he always liked getting up in front of a crowd of adoring girls and
would come to life behind his bass guitar with a lost-in-the-rhythm kind
of dance to the music. Now his dance is with his fingers and ears as
his recording engineer's knowledge and finesse helps Alex create the
sound that is uniquely Poppermost. It's a sound that is culled from
their many influences of the 60s and 70s when music was "real," then
filtered through Alex's aural vision for it.
Music education as a means to keep the century-old history of pop music
alive for a new generation is important. Alex was a teacher in the Los
Angeles Unified School District for 7 years, and hates the fact that
resources for music and art education evaporate year after year. It is
this attitude that has led to the Poppermost MySpace blogs he writes on
different performers' birthdays and what their music meant in his life.
The current recording project for Poppermost involves what will
eventually be an album of 12 songs written specifically as a result of
fans telling us about what moves them in response to certain themes.
Each month for a year (November 2007 - October 2008) we are holding the
"Especially For You Song Contest," in which the winner has a song
written for them. Entrants answer a trivia question about Poppermost,
and write an essay or story about whatever the theme happens to be for
that month. Once the winner is chosen, we write and record the song,
then post it on MySpace for one month. Be sure to check each month to
hear a brand new song and learn about a brand new chance to win. You,
too, can enter for a chance to win your very own song.
Our hopes for the future are probably like those of most musicians - to
have our music enjoyed and purchased by as many people as possible,
thereby earning a decent living doing what we love - making music.
